Part Three Aphorisms 20–44 addresses the third, fourth, and fifth essential questions:
How must I live?
What must I transform?
How do I live The Pure Teaching through sacred song?
This section shifts from metaphysical clarification to disciplined embodiment. The emphasis moves from identity to practice.
The third question is: How must I live?
Self-Control: The Ethical Structure of Living (Aphorisms 20–23)
Self-Control is first defined relationally. It governs discipleship; the relationship between teacher and student.
For the student, Self-Control comprises humility, enthusiastic perseverance, confidence, and consistent repetition. These qualities establish receptivity and stability.
For the teacher, Self-Control comprises renunciation, continence, cleanliness, and contentment. These qualities establish integrity and restraint.
The ethical framework then expands socially and personally.
The four social restraints—harmlessness, truthfulness, abundance, and generosity—regulate outward conduct.
The four personal observances—equality, compassion, consolation, and reconciliation—refine inner disposition.
Self-Control, rooted in non-violence, is the ethical basis for all relationships and peaceful coexistence.
